Cristiano Ronaldo managed to break yet another record after his latest appearance for Manchester United in their 2-1 Champions League victory against Villarreal.

Ronaldo is the most capped player in Champions League

When Ronaldo took to the field as a starter for Manchester United against Villarreal, he effectively became the player who has made the most appearances in Champions League history.

It was far from a vintage performance from Ronaldo to mark the occasion, however, the Portuguese international was still able to get Manchester United over the line with a heroic and dramatic later winner against Villarreal at Old Trafford.

Villarreal took the lead

It was Villarreal who could claim to have had the more clear cut chances in both the first and second half of that Champions League fixture on Wednesday evening. The visitors went ahead when they finally managed to capitalise on one of their chances. But that goal only seemed to spur Manchester United on further, with goals from Brazilian international left back Alex Telles and Ronaldo sealing a crucial three points at home.

Telles scored a magnificent volley from outside the box, to equalise for Manchester United. That strike also proved to be his first in the colours of the Red Devils. Just when the fixture looked destined to end as a draw, it would be that man again, Ronaldo who would ensure he would mark his landmark appearance, the only way he knows how, by hogging the headlines, with the goal that sunk Villarreal.

Ronaldo Surpasses Casillas

With that record 178th Champions League goal, Ronaldo surpassed former long-term Real Madrid teammate and legendary Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas. The former Spain, Real Madrid and FC Porto had previously held the appearances record at with 177 appearances in the competition. The five time Balon d’or winner started his journey in Europes elite competition with Manchester United back in 2003 and that record breaking appearances against Villarreal will he has come full circle in his career.

Also is the top goal scorer

Apart from making the most appearances in Champions League history, Ronaldo also has the record for the most goals scored in the tournament which stands at 136 after his late winner against Villarreal.
