There is a clear leader in the race for who is South Africa’s most expensive football player – Lyle Foster – but the rest of the top 10 might actually surprise you.

Of course, this isn’t the definitive ranking but it is nevertheless interesting to see what Transfermarkt comes up with from time to time.

Inside the top 10, headed by South Africa’s only Premier League player Lyle Foster, are four Mamelodi Sundowns players and one Kaizer Chiefs player which makes the split of local to foreign based players at 50-50.

If Kaizer Chiefs or Mamelodi Sundowns want to sign Khanyisa Mayo then they must meet the club’s valuation of him – which stands at 2 million Euros. That would have him at tied-second on the above list.

Cape Town City have set that price, according to KickOff.

MAYO CONTRACT DRIVES HIS VALUE

The fee is due to Mayo recently extended his deal until June 2028.

“We know what the value of the player (Mayo) is, this player for us in Europe would be worth 2 million dollars (over R38 million)” said John Comitis.

“He’s worth a lot, and that’s normal for a player like him. First of all, the offer will have to be right, the second thing is, also we should believe we could do without him.

“It’s important for our club to stay in the hunting pack of four clubs from the beginning of the season.” Said Comitis

Interestingly, though, Mayo’s father has suggested a move to Naturena could have been a good one for him.

“Unfortunately he has already signed an extension with Cape Town City,” Mayo told Scrolla.Africa.

“Yes, obviously, I would encourage him to go and play for Kaizer Chiefs because as we speak at the moment, Chiefs do not have a striker. He can easily fit in at Chiefs.”

“Growing up, it’s every player’s dream to play for a big team like Chiefs,” Mayo said on Radio 2000.

“There was interest [from Chiefs] in January, but Cape Town City was not willing to sell. But I’ve now committed to City until 2028. I’m happy here, and we want to challenge the big clubs and give it a go.”
