We certainly won’t see Khama Billiat playing for Kaizer Chiefs again this season, and it begs a deeper question about his long-term future in the PSL.

Billiat’s injury woes have wrecked his Kaizer Chiefs stay

The first few months of 2022-23 were stop/start for Billiat, to put it mildly. He created three goals for teammates early in the campaign but then his output dropped off significantly. In early February of 2023, he underwent groin surgery which ruled him out for the remainder of the campaign. It was a cruel blow for the wide man, but in a way it summed up his Chiefs career so far. He’s made just NINE league appearances this term.

Expiring contract

Billiat is 32 and will turn 33 in August. With his contract at Amakhosi expiring in June, it’s almost certain that he will become a free agent at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

What does the future hold for Billiat?

That’s anyone’s guess. A move to another PSL club wouldn’t be out of the question, but it also wouldn’t be a massive surprise to see him get a lucrative move abroad. It’s sad to see one of the league’s greatest ever players, who used to burn so bright, fizzle out like this.
