Mamelodi Sundowns clinched the DStv Premiership this season, with Orlando Pirates clinching second spot on the final day.

While Sundowns entered the last day of their title defence aiming to go unbeaten, Pirates were sweating for second spot.

Pirates finished 2nd with two trophies

In the end, it was not meant to be for Sundowns. Visitors Cape Town City ensured they would not go the whole season invincible courtesy of a 1-0 win. Pirates, on the other hand, received a huge favour from Richards Bay FC who beat Stellenbosch FC 2-1. That result, plus their 2-1 win over SuperSport United meant they would stumble across the line CAF Champions League position.

In more ways than one, Pirates’ season mirrors the last. They finished second on the final day and were able to clinch a domestic double in the MTN8 and the Nedbank Cup. Secondly, it was more of the same for Sundowns too, who won the league, but relinquished all their domestic trophies from the previous season to the Buccaneers.

Even though Pirates beating Sundowns twice in two cup finals is impressive, Masandawana are still on another level. The real bread and butter remains the league, which is still eluding coach Jose Riveiro. The Sea Robbers finished 23 points behind The Brazilians and according to Soccer-Laduma, they’re looking to change that next season!

Now want league at the expense of Sundowns

“The club (Pirates) has been pleased with the coach’s (Riveiro)  progress in the last two seasons and he’s got the support of everyone in the team. It is no secret that the coach’s wish is to win the league and he’s got the support of everyone in his attempt to do it” said the source.

It will surely be an uphill task for Pirates or any other DStv Premiership team to topple Sundowns. Their best bet would be smart recruitment, and it starts now.
