Pirates are thought to be long-term admirers of Williams who has opted to stay loyal to current club SuperSport United in the past.

Williams ready for a new challenge

Having spent all his youth and senior career at SuperSport so far, Williams recently sent a cat amongst the pigeons by admitting that there are currently talks with interested parties about his future, as reported by The South African News earlier this week. Furthermore, the 30-year-old has confirmed that even though he is open to staying at Matsatsantsa should they meet his ambitions, but was also adamant that, maybe now was the right time to go.

In the past, Pirates’ interest in Williams had come at times where they usually were solid with their goalkeeping options. In fact, when the Buccaneers secured the services of Ghanaian International Richard Ofori, many felt that, they had finally got their quality number one goalkeeper for the long-term. That would then have closed the chapter for Bafana Bafana’s number one, but it now seems as if, the stars are finally aligning with regards to both his fortunes and those of the Sea Robbers.

Pirates could finally have room for him

As it stands, Pirates seem likely to part ways with two of their veteran goalkeepers in Wayne Sandilands as well as Siyabonga Mpontshane who are both 38 and 36-years-old respectively. Sandilands, has been more or less a peripheral figure on the playing side for the Ghosts, operating more in the unofficial capacity of goalkeeper coach. Mpontshane on the other hand has actually served the club well particularly this season, filling in with aplomb during the long-term absence of Ofori. Ofori has since returned and managed to string together appearances, but has probably already raised alarm bells in the minds of the coaches with his latest injury record.

That would then justify a pursuit of Williams by Pirates and according to Soccer-Laduma, they have a plan in action.

Buccs set make an offer?

“According to sources, Pirates are monitoring the situation closely and are expected to make a formal offer for the Gqeberha-born (Williams) player’s services at the end of the season.” Wrote the publication.

Will SuperSport give him their blessing?

Williams now has just two years remaining on his deal at SuperSport and with his time served at the club, it is seems that they are very willing to give their product the blessing to move on. That, however, would seemingly have to be coupled with a fee that will make it worthwhile for the club. Whether that comes from Pirates or another club remains to be seen.
