Chiefs and Golden Arrows are ‘still talking’ about the potential transfer of Pule Mmodi, with more clarity on the deal expected this week.

It’s been widely reported for quite some time that Bafana Bafana attacker Pule Mmodi is one of the latest stars to join Kaizer Chiefs’ target list, although he has already begun pre-season training with Golden Arrows in recent days as negotiations seem to have hit a stumbling block.

If Arrows are keen on selling the player, it will remain to be seen what valuation is placed on the playmaker, and whether that dissuades Chiefs at all.

According to iDiski Times, Arrows are actually seeking ‘less than R3-million’ as his current contract expires at the end of the 2022/2023 season, and he would be free to sign for any team in the next January window.

Mmodi’s agent Solomon Seobe has said talks are ongoing between Chiefs and Arrows, but there would still appear to be quite a bit of work required before any deal materialises.

“The last year starts on the first of July. So he’s not a free agent,” Seobe confirmed to iDiski Times in Edition 60. “AmaZulu contacted me and I spoke to them, they wanted him but after they saw in the media that Chiefs are after him they eased their interest a bit.

“We don’t know what’s happening between Arrows and Chiefs, we think they are still talking – there’s nothing from Pirates at the moment, that I can say.

“With regard to transfer fees, that’s between Chiefs and Arrows, if they agree on a fee then I’ll enter to talk personal terms. I think this week I will get clarity about where he’s going because he’s reporting for pre-season this week and we’ll be able to get more information.”

Interestingly, SABC Sport reported this past weekend that Arrows remain willing to make the deal happen, and may have given Chiefs the first option to sign the Bafana Bafana playmaker.

“The first club that we have been talking to about Mmodi is Kaizer Chiefs and they continue to have a first option on this deal,” a sourced stated in the SABC Sport article. “They have shown a serious interest from the word go and it’s only fair that, we give him the first option.

“We will only start considering other offers only when nothing comes out of these negotiations but for now, we will have keep it there.”

The article also states that Arrows are “very keen” to sell in this upcoming season, otherwise Mmodi could end up leaving on a free transfer only in June next year.

Notably, Soccer Laduma also reported over the weekend that the deal may not happen in this transfer window, with the article suggesting that talks are ongoing, but that there is still a need to find common ground over the players’ valuation.

If the various parties are unable to settle on a ‘price’, then the deal could well be postponed to next season.

According to some other recent reports, insiders have apparently revealed that both parties have met, and that key negotiations are set to continue in earnest, with Chiefs believed to be ready to meet the demands of Arrows.

In an update provided by FARPost on Thursday, it’s been stated that “Kaizer Chiefs are believed to be preparing an improved offer” for Mmodi, while adding that “Arrows are willing to sell the player if the right offer comes”.

It remains to be seen if Mmodi will be part of the Chiefs’ rebuilt squad

With preparations for the 2022/23 season already in full swing, Chiefs have added five more players to the squad, with the arrival of Dillan SolomonsKamohelo Mahlatsi and Lehlogonolo George Matlou from Swallows FC, Siyethemba Sithebe from AmaZulu, and the official promotion of Mduduzi Shabalala from the Chiefs Reserve side set to bolster the Glamour Boys’ quest for glory.

The new season is set to start on Saturday, 6 August with the MTN8, while the DStv Premiership is set to kick off off on Friday, 12 August.

The GladAfrica Championship season will start the weekend thereafter on Saturday, August 20.

Having already secured the services of Ashley Du Preez and Zitha Kwinika for the next three years earlier this month, Chiefs management and the technical team have been hard at work to try and acquire the right players to fit into the system that will hopefully bring DStv Premiership success in the coming season.

In addition, on Tuesday night it was confirmed that Kaizer Chiefs have signed Yusuf Maart on a three-year deal with a two-year option.

Many believe this has been Chiefs’ best ‘transfer window’ for quite some time, and there are talks that there could still be one or two more signings secured by Amakhosi before next season.
