Over the last week, several notable players have been linked with high-profile transfers to Kaizer Chiefs, but the fact of the matter is that there will need to be a few players released.

Time now seems to be running out on Eric Mathoho, who recently suffered another frustrating injury setback, potentially bringing a premature end to what could be a disappointing final season at Naturena.

Mathoho has played just one minute of one league game this season, which would have been unimaginable prior to the start of this season.

According to iDiski Times, the 33-year-old is not likely to receive another extension when his contract expires at the end of this season, and Chiefs may be on the verge of bidding farewell to a long-serving player who has feature in over 250 matches for the club.

It remains to be seen whether Chiefs could perhaps offer him continued backing in light of his injury struggles, but sentimentality is unlikely to play any decisive role in this decision.

Mathoho could make a comeback before Chiefs’ season ends

The veteran defender recently reflected on the strange injury setback that prevented him from making a return to action this month.

“The way I got my (latest) injury, we were playing a friendly match with the DDC… I was sprinting and after that I tried to tackle the ball. But the way I landed it was somehow (wrong).

“I didn’t even know whether it was a hamstring or joint because my leg was painful, but after that I went for a scan and they found something there in my groin… The doctor said I would be out for four to five weeks but so far I feel much better, I’m on three weeks now. I started to jog last week.”
