PSL social media standings: Which of SA’s ‘Big 3’ has the most followers?

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have a massive rivalry both on and off the field but who leads the social media standings?

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have a massive rivalry both on and off the field – but who leads the social media standings?

Mamelodi Sundowns are the current DStv Premiership champions so they certainly have a large online following too.

With no fans allowed in the stadiums due to current Covid-19 protocols, we look at the supporters following their teams from home across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

So who leads the way in the social media standings?

1. KAIZER CHIEFS – 7.5 MILLION

Amakhosi fans lead the way with the largest following on social media in the PSL.

Chiefs have 3.6 million followers on their official Facebook page and a further 2.2 million supporters on Twitter. On Instagram, they have 698 000 followers.

2. ORLANDO PIRATES – 4. 7 MILLION

This Soweto derby continues off the field as Buccaneers fans take second spot.

The Bucs have 2.5 million followers on Facebook, 1.7 million on Twitter and are just shy of half a million on Instagram where they have 481 000 followers.

3. MAMELODI SUNDOWNS – 2.3 MILLION

The Brazilians have become a force to be reckoned with in the modern PSL era, winning 5 of the last 7 league titles. 

As a result, they boast one of the fastest-growing fanbases. Sundowns has been home to the likes of Pitso Mosimane and Percy Tau, two of the most famous men in South African football, and currently boast Themba Zwane, Peter Shalulile and new recruit Thabiso Kutumela.

Sundowns have 1.1 million fans on Facebook, 870 000 on Twitter and just under a third of a million on Instagram with 316 000 supporters.

BEST OF THE REST

Sundowns are the third most followed team on social media, beating the likes of AmaZulu, Cape Town City and Tshwane rivals, SuperSport United.

None of these sides have a million followers with United having the biggest online support out of these sides.

They have roughly 600 000 followers on social media across these platforms.
