Phala earned more at Platinum Stars than at both Sundowns & Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns winger Thuso Phala has revealed that he was earning more at Platinum Stars than he was at both the Gauteng teams.

Phala played for Chiefs between the 2007 and 2009 before he moved to Sundowns in a swap deal involving Josta Dladla to the Glamour Boys in 2009.

The now 35-year-old midfielder would spend a just over season with the Brazilians before Platinum Stars signed him on a three-year deal in 2010.

Now, Phala has dropped a bombshell that while he was earning a ‘good’ salary at Chiefs, that would get even better when he moved to Sundowns.

However, Platinum Stars, without being aware how much he used to earn at Sundowns, offered him a better salary package than both Chiefs and the Tshwane giants.

Phala said he used to earn between R35 000 and R40 000 at Sundowns while Platinum Stars offered him R60 000 per month in 2010.

“Obviously, I am going to Sundowns. So, they had to add something on top but the Sundowns package was better than the one I had at Chiefs,” said Phala on Off The Pitch with TK.

“I don’t know how it works with the teams as to whether or not they know how much you were earning, I don’t know… but the truth is that I was earning more at Platinum Stars than at Sundowns.

“Chiefs gave me a good contract, Sundowns gave me a better contract and then Platinum Stars gave me a (much) better contract,” he confirmed.

“And for them, it was like, ‘yhoo boy, eish, you know it’s Platinum Stars and there are budget issues for us but we will give R60 000’, and I was like ‘what?’.

“Maybe they thought I was getting more at Sundowns. At Sundowns, I was getting around R35 000, R40 000. So, they were like, ‘we will give you R60 000’.”
