Billiat at a crossroads

Khama Billiat’s contract with Chiefs expired at the end of June and his future has been a constant subject of speculation. The 32-year-old has been with the Glamour Boys for five years, but never been able to replicate the scintillating form that saw him become one of the finest players in the country with Sundowns. Last season he appeared just 12 times in the league and didn’t score a single goal.

Tanzanian giants Young Afircans have reportedly been watching Billiat’s progress. They are aware that talks between the player and Chiefs have broken down and they might be tempted by the option of signing a player of his quality and experience as a free agent.

Offer a Billiat new contract

It’s a risky option, but there’s a big upside. If he’s able to regain full fitness and form, Billiat would be a good rotation option for new boss Molefi Ntseki. He could also brush off on the younger players in the group. Could the new arrivals at Naturena also help Billiat rediscover his golden touch?

Get Billiat’s wages off the balance sheet

The last option for Chiefs would be to try and find a local club to take him off their hands. The issue with that, of course, is that Billiat is on massive wages and only a handful of clubs could afford them. It might then come to a situation where he would have to take a pay-cut to remain in top-flight South African football.

What do you think is the likeliest outcome? Will Billiat be offered a new one-year deal?
