The unique record Stuart Baxter missed out on in Kaizer Chiefs draw against Amazulu

Kaizer Chiefs missed out on an opportunity to win a third three points in a row when a late Bonginkosi Ntuli equalizer earned Amazulu a point.

That Amazulu equaliser coming with about 15 minutes to play would have come as a serious kick in the teeth for Chiefs, and particularly coach Stuart Baxter. 

Not an entertaining encounter

It was a largely frustrating watch for on-lookers, as both Chiefs and Amazulu struggled to string together any decent possession, therefore it was no surprise that neither side were able to carve out many clear cut chances. Baxter, once again set up with his preferred tactic of three defensive midfielders, which then seemed to stifle the team’s creativity going forward.

Amazulu own goal benefitting Chiefs

It was then, perhaps an accurate reflection of proceedings that the opening goal of the encounter would come in the form of an Amazulu on goal. Former Chiefs midfielder Keagan Buchanan, rushing back into his own box with great speed, trying to atone for losing the ball, but ending up making a desperate lunge which resulted in him putting the ball in the back of his own net.

That would prove to be as big a threat as it got in the first half for Chiefs, with a Keagan Dolly close range strike, that was expertly saved by Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Veli Mothwa being their best chance of the second stanza. Amazulu would then be spurred on by that, and after the Glamour Boys lost Cole Alexander due to a red card, substitute Ntuli would then be on hand to fire home an important equaliser for Usuthu. That would then prove to be the last goal of the match, with both teams sharing the spoils.

The record Baxter missed out on

That late equaliser would not only rob Chiefs of another three points, but also rob Baxter of a unique record. Had Amakhosi held on, Baxter would’ve become the first Chiefs coach to win seven matches against the same opposition in the PSL era. Will he be back to try complete the record next season? That remains to be seen.
