In-demand defender can’t reach an agreement with club

Contract talks between Sibusiso Mthethwa and his current club Stellenbosch FC appear to be at an impasse.

Sekhukhune United and AmaZulu are some of the clubs believed to have showed interest in the centre-back who has now entered the last six months of his contract.

“Stellenbosch hasn’t yet reached an agreement with Sibusiso Mthethwa regarding the extension of his contract. There are issues that the parties are not agreeing on and one of those is the length of the proposed new deal,” a source told Soccer Laduma.

Matlaba requested his release according to Swallows Chairman.

“He had six months on his contract, meaning he can sign a pre-contract somewhere else. But we did not want a situation where any player has committed his long term future at another club and we are holding them back. If there’s an opportunity for them to earn more somewhere else, we are open to discussing that. Thabo Matlaba is no longer a Swallows player and we wish him the best of luck.”

Rumours abound that Kaizer Chiefs have managed to force through a deal for Sithebe.

According to an insider, Amazulu won’t seek their pound of flesh.

“You see the issue now is, if coach Benni goes against the management and insists on fielding the player that might destroy his relationship with them and as you know our football, that will lead to his suspension and so on,” An insider told Kickoff.com.

“So the better way to deal with the situation is to release the player to Chiefs. You can’t risk breaking a good team spirit just for one player, especially when they are doing so well in Africa. So the club has no choice but to sell the player and everybody will be happy.”
