SuperSport United looking to leave Lucas Moripe Stadium home

SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews says the DStv Premiership club would consider relocating to a new stadium if they find the right home.

Matsatsantsa have played their home matches at Atteridgeville’s Lucas Moripe Stadium for a number of years.

However, they have struggled to attract fans to the 30 000-seater venue that they share with Tshwane giants Mamelodi Sundowns.

SuperSport United have a number of stadiums in mind

Matthews is considering a number venues that he feels could help boost support at games in the future.

The SuperSport United boss told the OTW Podcast: “I think that’s a process and we’d be happy to look at that process, we’ve looked in Daveyton at the Sinaba Stadium – which is a nice small stadium in the heart of the township where we think we can get nice support.

“Highlands Park went to Makhulong and they made it a nice little fortress for them so it can be done. There are one or two municipalities that are putting in smaller stadiums as we speak.

“Even in Pretoria, the Caledonian Stadium would be very interesting for us. We would actually grab an opportunity back like when I started in 1999/00 when played out of Caledonian.

“It was a small 5 000, 6 000 stadium and if you get 3 000 to 4 000 students from TUT, it rocked, it was hostile and it wasn’t easy for teams to beat us.

“So I believe if we could get that right; a little Caledonian or Sinaba Stadium, in the heart of the township or in the other right in the city hub.

“People can walk without public transport, just in that Hatfield and the inner-city area we feel we can fill the Caledonian which will bring a better atmosphere.

“It will bring more out of the players and give the club a boost to get into the top-four of the league with a formidable home ground where not many teams can get points off us.”
