Mokoena has consistently been the subject of interest for both Chiefs and Sundowns who seem to be the two clubs battling it out for his services locally.

Mokoena attracted interest from Chiefs and Sundowns

Mokoena had long been touted as a gem in the Supersport United ranks, with many still wondering how the club have been able to keep a hold of him for this long.  It seemed like Matsatsantsa were poised at least one or even both of Mokoena and Sipho Mbule to either Chiefs or Sundowns in the previous window, but a move never materialised for neither of the duo.

In the case of Mokoena, Supersport United were always clear in their position, of being willing to sell the player but preferably to an overseas club rather than to Chiefs or Sundowns. In the mist of that seeming tug-of-war, Mokoena was reported to have even stated his preference as to which of the DStv Premiership giants he wanted to join, and giving reasons why to close sources.

However, he remained put and now having just become a key component of the national team under new Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos, Mokoena’s stock has only gone on to soar to greater heights. His performances for Supersport United have also added to that, and would’ve undoubtedly reignited the interest from both Chiefs and Sundowns once again. That has since prompted Matthews to clarify the club’s transfer stance on the player.

Matthews reveals Supersport United’s transfer stance

“Yes, we have given Tebza (Mokoena) that commitment, that this can be the last season with us, and he can get the big money move that he’s looking for and that he’s worked hard for since he was 16 years old,” he told Thomas Mlambo on Ultimate Sports Show.

Matthews would then go on to give a big boost to Chiefs and Sundowns’ chances of landing Mokoena’s signature.

“And part of the journey with the players is to know when to let go and when is it time for them to move on and have a high impact in their careers in the South African football landscape. Also quite honestly when we can get a good return, so, for us, that time is now and we are not going to hold Tebza back, we want him, and his move wherever he transpires to be, to be something that motivates other young players in the club to stick with us for the years that Tebza stuck with us, and earn big money moves when the time comes.”  Continued Matthews.

Matthews confirms that they had turned down moves for Mokoena in the previous window, which could hint that they were local bids from the likes of Chiefs and Sundowns, or moves abroad the club did not feel were suitable for all parties involved. But he did reiterate that ‘Tebza’ is likely playing his last season at Supersport United.

Both clubs already turned down?

“We turned down, we told him, we wanted to stick out this season with us. And in that undertaking, we said to him, at the end of the season, he could pick a move that was good for him. And we have made the best of that move, which we will. And we have got a couple of interesting options, it’s going to be a good time for him to move on, he’s got lots of play, now he has just broken nicely to the fire squad as a regular. And we feel it’s the right time now to leave him after the past years.” Concluded Matthews
