That loss was only their first loss of the whole PSL season, and it prevented them from going invincible. Had they managed to avoid defeat against the Capetonians, they would’ve become the first side in South African football to achieve such a feat. In the end though, they had to settle for the league record points, which is now 73.

In a title victory that was never in doubt, it was made much tougher by all the other tournaments they played in. Those tournaments are the reason why Sundowns went on another recruitment drive in the January transfer window. One of those players that was signed at the start of the year is Bafana Bafana international Thembinkosi Lorch

Lorch joined Sundowns from Pirates

Lorch was perhaps the shock transfer of the January transfer window, after a deadline day move from rivals Orlando Pirates. The playmaker has played 14 games and has five goals to his name, with a Nedbank Cup final looming. Now ahead of that big occasion against his former side, the player was caught on camera celebrating a little too much. In a video that ended up going viral, his coach Rulani Mokwena ended up seeing it.

Now speaking to SNAWA on SABC Radio, Mokwena admitted he was disappointed by Lorch’s actions.

“Like everybody else, Lorch is human, Like me, who makes mistakes, who is imperfect. I’m probably even more imperfect than him and I make probably more mistakes than him. But I cannot go deep into this issue because I still have to discuss it with him face to face. He phoned me and he was in tears. And that broke me, for sure. Because I’m close to my players when my players are crying and are emotional, I get emotional, and I cry and I feel their pain too. And that’s how close I am with them. But I don’t want to talk too much about the issue except to say that I am extremely disappointed because I have said that to him on the phone,” said Mokwena.

Mokwena also said the two would have a stern talk to ensure Lorch knows what’s expected of a Sundowns player.

Mokwena admits disappointment

“As I said, it’s individual it’s a one-on-one and it’s one that has to take place with respect, but also with also a clear understanding of what is allowed and tolerated at Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club and what is not.” Mokwena said.

Will Lorch be in the Sundowns Nedbank Cup final match day squad against Pirates?
