Mamelodi Sundowns mentor Rulani Mokwena says he’s fully deserves to win the DStv Premiership Coach of the Season award.

The league is yet to announce nominees for this season’s award as the debate over who deserve awards from different categories continue.

And while other coaches such as Steve Barker, Jose Riveiro and Sead Ramovic have done well for their respective teams, Mokwena said the award is his.

In all fairness, Mokwena is making a strong case given that Sundowns won the league with six league games to go.

Furthermore, Sundowns have just set a new PSL record of 72 points after just 28 games, and they could still add to that tally with two games to go.

That just one of many PSL records broken and set by Sundowns this season, and to add to that, they are 22 points ahead of second-placed Stellenbosch FC.

For Mokwena, a coach that wins the DStv Premiership should, in a normal world, scoop the Coach of the Season accolade.

SUNDOWNS COACH RULANI WAITING FOR HIS COACH OF THE SEASON AWARD

“The Coach of the Season would be me, that’s what I think. I think the Coach of the Season must be the coach that wins the league.

“But I can’t not give lots of compliments to the work that Steve Barker has done. He deserves incredible, incredible, incredible plaudits for the work he’s done at Stellenbosch,” Mokwena said as per SABC Sport.

“And many of my other colleagues, I mean there’s been some very good work that’s been done. Jose Riveiro, Pirates has done some very good work but without sounding arrogant, the Coach of the Season in my opinion would be me, for sure and I have no doubts about it,” Mokwena added.

MOKWENA IN FOR SECOND TOP AWARD

Should Mokwena indeed win the award, it would be his second in the space of a month after recently claiming the Cosafa Coach of the Year award.

He was honoured for the stellar job he has done with Sundowns, winning the league and the African Football League while also reaching the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.

Now, Mokwena targeting a new PSL record of finishing the league season unbeaten by avoiding defeat in the next two games.

Sundowns play TS Galaxy on Tuesday before wrapping up their league campaign with a home match against Cape Town City on Saturday, 25 May.
