Sundowns have deadline day set to extend February’s contract

February has featured just once for Sundowns, and it was a substitute appearance when Denis Onyango got injured.

Mamelodi Sundowns have a deadline set to trigger an option on Jody February’s contract as his current deal is set to expire on 30 June.

According to February’s agent Mike Makaab, Sundowns have until the end of May to take up that option.

Should Sundowns fail to meet that deadline then February would be entitled to open talks with a team of his choice.

February has been on the books of Sundowns for almost five years now after being signed from then Ajax Cape Town.

However, he spent the majority of those years out on loan in order to get much-needed game time before returning to Sundowns.

He had a stint with the now defunct Cape Umoya United before being sent to AmaZulu where he spent a season out on loan.

February also featured for Moroka Swallows but he went back to Sundowns although he is further down in the pecking order.

Now, will Sundowns trigger the option to retain his services for one more season? Only time will tell…

SUNDOWNS HAVE UNTIL 31 MAY TO KEEP FEBRUARY

“No, they have an option to extend for an additional year, [and it] has to be exercised by the end of May,” Makaab told SABC Sport.

WHAT ARE FEBRUARY’S CHANCES OF REGULAR GAME TIME?

February’s chances of a regular game time at Sundowns are minimal at this stage given Ronwen Williams’ form.

There is also Denis Onyango, and although he’s close to retirement, he remains an important member of this Sundowns team.

One would say February is clearly competing with Reyaad Pieterse for a place on the bench as Onyango is still ahead in the pecking order.

And at 28, February knows that he should be playing regularly and perhaps another loan move would do him a world of good.
