Steve Komphela: Floyd Mbele rules out Orlando Pirates move for Mamelodi Sundowns coach

Orlando Pirates administrative officer Floyd Mbele has dismissed reports that Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Steve Komphela is poised to replace Josef Zinnbauer as the club’s new head coach.

Komphela is currently part of a highly-successful three-man coaching team at the helm of the reigning DStv Premiership champions alongside Manqoba Mngqithi and Rhulani Mokwena.

With Zinnbauer’s stay at Orlando Pirates under the spotlight after a good – not great – last season where they finished in third place, 17 points behind winners Mamelodi Sundowns and four points behind runners-up AmaZulu, Komphela has been linked with the Buccaneers top job.

In addition, with Golden Arrows coach Mandla Ncikazi recently joining Orlando Pirates’ technical team on a three-year deal, Komphela has been tipped to reunite with the coach, having previously worked together at Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows.

However, a change in head coach is not on the agenda, according to Mbele.

He told SAFM: “Why has coach Steve [Komphela] been linked to Pirates?

“Is it because of his past with Mandla [Ncikazi]? But coach Steve [Komphela] went to Pirates and coach Mandla was not there, he was at Maritzburg.

“I am not too sure what has led to this flurry of coach Mandla Ncikazi coming in, therefore coach Steve Komphela is coming.

“Coach Steve [Komphela] is employed by Mamelodi Sundowns, congratulating them for having won the inaugural DStv Premiership.

“But there is no ounce of truth that Steve Komphela is coming to Orlando Pirates, certainly not at the moment, no.”
