Kaizer Chiefs were dumped out of the Telkom Knockout semi-finals by Maritzburg United, but will look to return to winning ways in the league against Stellenbosch FC.

Amakhosi have a convincing lead at the top of the Premiership table. They sit 10 points clear of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, although Masandawana have a game in hand.

Fifth-placed Bidvest Wits are also worth taking note of, as they are 13 points off the top with four games to spare.

Amakhosi beat Cape Town City 2-1 in the league and then on penalties in the Telkom Knockout when they visited the Citizens in Cape Town. Another win in the Mother City would see Ernst Middendorp’s men maintain an iron grip on first place.

The German mentor was in no mood for excuses after Amakhosi went down to his old team at Mbombela Stadium.

“Congratulations to Maritzburg United, I think a deserved win, there’s no doubt about it. After we conceded 1-0 in the first-half, absolutely challenges with our defence despite we were sometimes two against one, three against one,” Middendorp told SuperSport.

“A bit surprisingly, on the other side in terms of our combination game through the midfield it was not really a factor as it could be, should it be, how we can do it, good,” he went on.

“Then of course you equalise, then you give it away again, a little bit surprising with the quality we should have. It was not definitely the performance what we have seen today, what we are capable of.”

Chiefs will need to put in a better performance against a Stellenbosch side which has already seen off Orlando Pirates at Cape Town Stadium this season. A player to watch is striker Ryan Moon, who could face Chiefs for the first time since his exit from the club.

Kick-off time and prediction

Kick-off time: Wednesday 27 November at 19:30

Prediction: Stellenbosch are expected to raise their game for the visit of the Glamour Boys, as they did against Orlando Pirates. However, Chiefs’ league form is outstanding and their cup setback will likely have fired them up.

Kaizer Chiefs are tipped to come away from this clash as 2-1 winners.
