The local soccer calender’s most anticipated fixture is the Soweto derby clash between fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, and tickets have gone on sale with a little under a month to go before kick-off.

The battle between the two giants of South African soccer takes place at FNB Stadium on Saturday 9 November – and is expected to draw yet another capacity crowd.

Derby fever kicks in early

Interest in this particular derby has been bumped up by Amakhosi’s sudden resurgence, after a difficult period capped off by their worst season in recent years.

Chiefs finished ninth in the league standings in the previous campaign, where they lost two of the three Soweto derby fixtures played in the season across competitions.

It was another year in a lean spell against their rivals, which has seen them not registering a competitive victory in the fixture since December 2014.

However, things have looked up for the Glamour Boys, who lead the Absa Premiership standings after eight games played.

Pirates, on the other hand, have had a tough season since overcoming their bitter foes in a pre-season friendly.

The Buccaneers won the Carling Black Label clash between the two sides in July, running off 2-0 victors at the very same FNB Stadium.

That was before beating Bloemfontein Celtic at home in their season opener, a win which would become their only victory for the longest time, as they faced a difficult spell, which featured the sudden resignation of coach Milutin Sredojevic.

The Serb’s assistant, Rhulani Mokwena has seen taken over the reins and has just one win across all competitions so far, with Pirates languishing in mid-table.

Despite their shaky form, the Buccaneers will be looking to continue their unbeaten run in the Soweto Derby, with players needing no extra motivation to bring out the goods.
