Despite dominating every stat category, Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-1 to their bitter rivals at the Orlando Stadium.

The teams first faced each other in the league in 1971, making this year the 50th anniversary of their first encounter.

Overall, Amakhosi and the Buccaneers have now met 172 times in all official matches across the league and the various cup competitions.

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates’ rivalry stretches back to 1970 when they met for the first time in a third-place playoff in the Rogue Cup on 24 January 1970.

Orlando Pirates won the match 6-4.

Their first league meeting took place on 24 April 1971.

The sides have now met a further 98 times with Kaizer Chiefs having won 40 matches, Orlando Pirates 23 while the remaining 36 clashes have ended in stalemates.

Kaizer Chiefs did the double over Orlando Pirates in their first league clashes in 1971, winning the first ever match 4-3 at home and following it up with a 2-1 away win later in the season.

Last season’s league double over Orlando Pirates was only the second time that Kaizer Chiefs had managed to record home and away league wins in the PSL era over their rivals in the same season.

The other occasion was in the 2005/06 season.

Coincidentally, on both occasions they were coached by Ernst Middendorp.

Since the PSL era started in 1996/97, Saturday’s match was the 49th league clash between the Soweto giants.

Kaizer Chiefs are slightly ahead having managed to win 13 matches to Orlando Pirates’ 12 with the other 24 clashes ending in draws.

The 100th Soweto derby league encounter between the two South African giants is currently scheduled for Sunday, 21 March at the FNB Stadium at 15:30.
