Soweto derby countdown: 10 days to go until Orlando Stadium clash

The second and final Soweto derby of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season is scheduled for Saturday, 5 March at the Orlando Stadium.

The second and final Soweto derby of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season is scheduled for Saturday, 5 March at the Orlando Stadium.

Kick-off is scheduled for 15:30.

To date there have been 51 Soweto league derbies since the PSL era kicked off in the 1996/97 season.

Kaizer Chiefs won the most recent Soweto derby

Orlando Pirates won the very first clash on 18 January 1997 at the FNB Stadium, 1-0, while Kaizer Chiefs won the most recent match on 6 November 2021, also at the FNB Stadium, 2-1.

In the 51 clashes to date, Kaizer Chiefs have won 15, Orlando Pirates have triumphed on 12 occasions and there have been 24 draws.

In the 25 completed leagues seasons to date, the two Soweto giants have each won four titles.

Orlando Pirates’ most recent success came in the 2011/12 season while Kaizer Chiefs last tasted victory in 2014/15 – largely thanks to how dominant Mamelodi Sundowns have been in recent times.

In the 25 seasons to date, the Glamour Boys have finished higher than the Buccaneers in the final standings on 13 occasions while Orlando Pirates have enjoyed bragging rights 12 times.

The biggest difference in finishing positions between the two sides in seven places – for both teams.

In the 2016/17 season Kaizer Chiefs finished fourth, while Orlando Pirates struggled to 11th place.

In the 2018/19 season the roles were reversed when Orlando Pirates finished as runners-up and Kaizer Chiefs could do no better than ninth place.

Amakhosi will have one more DStv Premiership match ahead of the Soweto derby when they face Baroka FC away from home on Saturday, 26 February (19:30).

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates have two more encounters, against Royal Leopards in the CAF Confederation Cup at the Mbombela Stadium (Sunday, 27 February at 18:00) and at home against Cape Town City FC in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday, 2 March at 17:30.
