Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu appeared on track for a 1-0 victory when Chavani awarded Amakhosi a dubious penalty in stoppage time.

AmaZulu defender Tapelo Xoki was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area despite TV replays showing he had both his arms tucked behind his back.

After SAFA’s Referees Review Committee met on Monday to discuss the incident, Chavani, along with his fourth official on the day, Moeketsi Molelekoa, will have their feet up until mid-November.

“The match referee, Mr Jelly Chavani and the fourth official, Mr Moeketsi Molelekoa by erring, have been found guilty of executing their duties in an unacceptable manner and have duly been suspended from officiating in matches in the GladAfrica First Division and Dstv Premiership for a period of six (6) weeks,” read the SAFA Referees Review Committee ruling.

“During this time, the SAFA Referees Technical Sub-Committee will oversee the rehabilitation of these match officials, to ensure that they are fully debriefed and better equipped in the future.

“The match officials, with specific reference to the referee, erred in his overall game management of the penalty area incident.

“The referee and the fourth official erred in their interpretation and application of the Laws of the Game with specific reference to considerations and guidelines pertaining to Handball as covered under Law 12 of the IFAB Laws of the Game.

“The overall result of the game had been altered because of this error of judgement; AmaZulu FC were unduly prejudiced by this decision.”

This incident is not the first time Chavani has fallen foul of the SAFA Referees Review Committee this year.

In January Chavani found himself in hot water following a string of questionable decisions, most notably a penalty that wasn’t awarded to Orlando Pirates in their clash against Swallows FC.

In that particular match – which ended 1-1 – the Buccaneers were denied a clear-cut penalty after Fortune Makaringe was brought down in the penalty area.

Unbelievably, instead of awarding the penalty, Chavani showed Makaringe a yellow card for “simulation”.
