Mamelodi Sundowns having seemingly beaten their rivals Kaizer Chiefs to a high profile signing, once again with the latest reports hinting that their move for SuperSport United midfielder Sipho Mbule could be finalised this week.

Mbule has been a huge subject of interest to both clubs

The South African junior international has been the subject of intense interest with speculation rife that both Sundowns and Chiefs were going head-to-head for Mbule’s signature.

Mbule had emerged as an early transfer target for Chiefs, even during their ban with the thought that he would be one of their marquee acquisitions as soon as they had served their time. Reports then quickly flooded of Sundowns also joining that conversation, something that seemed to throw a cat amongst the pigeons.

The South African then published an article early last month where a SuperSport United official, speaking on condition of anonymity to The Citizen, had seemed to send a clear transfer message to Chiefs, telling them they would have to pay big to secure Mbule’s services. That type of conversation will always sound like music to Sundowns’ ears.

Sundowns were reported to have beaten Chiefs to his signature

And seemingly it did, as on the very same week a follow up article was published, with sources now claiming that Sundowns were set to beat Chiefs to the signing of Mbule. SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews came out to vehemently deny those reports however.

SuperSport’s coach Kaitano Tembo had also come out saying that the club did not want to lose a talent like Mblue to Sundowns or Chiefs but the fact that there is so much interest from “bigger clubs” in their Academy products is always a big feather in their cap.

Mbule could be a Sundowns player by the end of the week

It now appears as if his worst fears maybe about to become a reality. Reports have surfaced on Tuesday afternoon via Kickoff that Sundowns are making great progress with regards to the deal with Mbule and may even beat Chiefs to his signature as early as this week!

“There is huge interest from Sundowns (In Mbule). The deal could be finalised this week,” says the source.

If this is true, it will come as a massive blow to the Chiefs faithful who are desperate to see their club inject some quality new blood into what is expected to be a squad rebuild at Naturena this coming season.

The two clubs have been going head to head all window

Chiefs and Sundowns seem to have been going head to head on a number of targets and deals in this window. Besides the battle for Mbule, the two South African football giants have reportedly gone toe to toe for junior international Katlego Mohamme as well as Swallows FC centre back Njabulo Ngcobo.
