Stellebosch is embroiled in a CAF Champions League scrap with Orlando Pirates but they also want to sign one of their key players.

Stellies are keen on Orlando Pirates man Monare

Stellenbosch looks set to lose talented attacking midfielder Jayden Adams to Mamelodi Sundowns. The 23-year-old is now a fully-fledged Bafana international. Now, local outlet believes Stellies want to grab Pirates schemer Thabang Monare as Adams’ replacement. 34-year-old Monare has featured 11 times in the league for Pirates this term.

“Orlando Pirates and Bafana midfielder Thabang Monare could reunite with his former coach Steve Barker at Stellenbosch FC next season. Stellies are believed to be monitoring Thabang Monare’s situation at Pirates with keen interest, as they harbour an intention to bring him to the Western Cape next season, possibly to fill the void left by Darrel Matsheke. The Winelands outfit is facing the potential of playing in one of the CAF competitions next season, and are, ironically, in a neck-and-neck race for the second spot in the DStv Premiership,” they said.

Monare’s future is up in the air

The same publication belives Monare is not close to deciding to stay at the Sea Robbers.

“The club (Pirates) is waiting for the end of the season to finalise the list of players leaving. There is also the issue of playing in the CAF tournament that they are considering before finalizing the list of players leaving. The club has not yet discussed anything with Monare.” Said a source to the publication.

Pirates let Stellies off the hook

Stellenbosch fell to a surprising 2-0 defeat to Swallows on Saturday, opening the door for Orlando Pirates to take control of the race for a top-two finish. However, the Sea Robbers conspired to lose 1-0 at home to relegation strugglers Richards Bay. This is despite Jose Riviero’s men coming into the clash on a seven-game winning streak across all competitions. Much of the post-match talk revolved around a dangerous tackle by Tshegofatso Mabasa, but in the cold light of day, the Buccaneers are no longer in control of their CAF Champions League destiny. Stellenbosch knows that two wins from their two games will tie up second place. However, their fixtures don’t look favourable, against the newly-crowned champions and a crunch clash against a Bay team fighting for their lives.
