Last week Friday Mama Joy confirmed on Newzroom Afrika that she would be ending her 30 year affiliation to Pirates, and switching to Royal AM.

Mama Joy wasted no time displaying her pride for Royal AM

Mama Joy also wasted no time displaying her pride in her new Royal AM colours, on the same morning she had confirmed her switch from Pirates. These news came as an obvious shock to many as Mama Joy had become synonymous with the Buccaneers brand as their number one as well as one of their most vocal supporters over the years.

“South Africans, I’m here today to tell you that I’m leaving Orlando Pirates, hard as it is, I’m going to Royal AM. “From today, no Buccaneers but her majesty, I’m royal.” she told Newzroom Afrika.

Explains her reasons for leaving

“I decided to join Royal AM for me to support MaMkhize, you know MaMkhize? You remember last time she was in GladAfrica and she wanted to come to PSL, in the last minute  they say no Sekhukhune has qualified and you’re going to play in the playoffs. It was like hard for me as a woman to see another woman suffering because you can see how she is doing things.MaMkhize loves soccer, it pained me to see her being hurt that much. She managed to buy Bloemfontein Celtic’s status. “I was surprised to see a women so passionate and I realised how much she really wanted to be in the PSL and now, she is in the PSL.” Mama Joy concluded

Now with such a move comes the obvious opportunity for other football supporters to give her a backlash, but Mama Joy has since delivered a stern message to football fans that may try that with her.

Her stern message to the supporters

“Everybody is talking about Mama Joy. They will talk and they will be quiet, but oksalayo [the fact is] I am a Royal AM supporter, “They can talk, they can do what they want because when I took my decision they were not there. But if it’s a change it’s a change. There’s nothing you can do.Today I went to Bara Mall and came across a lot of supporters. Some were saying, ‘Hey Majestic’, some were saying, ‘Hey sell-out’ “It’s friendly. I’m a friendly person and I talk to everybody. It’s also football banter.”.  Said Mama Joy to TimesLIVE

Who she supported before Pirates

Even though Mama Joy was synonymous with the Pirates brand for all of three decades, the Sea Robbers were surprisingly not her first football club affiliation. In fact, the team she supported before Pirates, is possibly even more surprising. According to the same publication, Mama Joy grew up in a Kaizer Chiefs household and subsequently followed the family tradition by supporting the Ghosts arch rivals. She then developed a love for Pirates in her teem years.
