Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane relieves how the club beat Kaizer Chiefs to Thapelo Morena’s signature.

Chiefs used to be the most desirable teams to join in the country, but Sundowns is slowly taking over.

In a transition that seems to be filtering down from the top, Sundowns are starting to beat Chiefs to top talent. This includes the best of the best in terms of senior players, as well as junior players. But back in their hay day their professionalism, state of the art Naturena facilities and trophy winning streak used to do all the talking. For Morena, however, that was not a factor.

But that could be attributed to how dedicated Mosimane was to cause of signing Morena for Sundowns ahead of Chiefs. Jingles coached the Pretoria outfit from 2012 to 2020 and signed the Bafana Bafana international in 2016. Even though Amakhosi were heavily pursuing the player, he ended up signing a five-year deal with Masandawana.

“I’m happy to see Thapelo Morena gracing the back pages of the newspapers; he’s a very good player. When we signed him at Sundowns, I had to go to Randfontein to convince his parents to sign with us. It was tough because even Kaizer Chiefs wanted him at that time. So I’m glad I played my part.” Said Mosimane to RADIO 2000

Now 30, Morena is a key player for both Sundowns and Bafana Bafana. He recently returned to his former home stadium in Bloemfontein not score a brace. Those were his first two goals for the national team. Furthermore, he was part of the side who the bronze medal at Afcon earlier this year.

To date, Morena has featured 277 times for Sundowns, scoring 22 goals while providing 30 assists. Last season, was not his best for output as he only scored once and assisted once in 27 games. Overall, however, The Brazilians will be happy they beat Chiefs to his signature!
