South African referee Victor Gomes is reportedly set to retire after the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar.

South African referee Victor Gomes is reportedly set to retire after the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar.

According to iDiski Times, Gomes will officiate his final league game when Kaizer Chiefs visit Orlando Pirates in Saturday’s Soweto derby.

Reasons for Gomes’ sudden retirement are unknown at this stage but he will bow out as one of the top referees in the world.

At 39, very few people could have expected Gomes to hang up his whistle especially in the middle of the DStv Premiership season.

Gomes was, for the longest time, seen as a controversial referee by the majority of South African football fans but the public fell in love with after some great performances in big international matches.

The no-nonsense refeee will officiate at the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament which gets underway in Qatar on 20 November.

VICTOR GOMES SET TO QUIT REFEREEING AFTER 14 YEARS

Gomes made his PSL debut as a referee in 2008 and he became an international referee in 2011.

Gomes won hus first referee of the season award during the 2012-13 season and added another four seasons later.

In 2021, Gomes took Africa by storm as officiated in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) between Senegal and Egypt.
