This weekend it first emerged that Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper and club captain Itumeleng Khune had reportedly arrived for training under the influence of alcohol, and now faces suspension.

In another report by Sunday World, it’s now further reported that there is serious tension brewing between black and coloured players.

According to the article, black players have claimed their ‘coloured’ teammates receive preferential treatment from the club’s management. In one example cited, it’s reported that coloured players, apparently led by Keagan Dolly and Brandon Peterson, were allowed to leave the team hotel for a ‘big’ night out to watch the Springboks’ Rugby World Cup final.

“The complaints from the black players are that the ‘coloured’ players’ matters are always swept under the carpet, while their cases are dealt with harshly,” the report further states.

Chiefs responded to the media enquiry

Having been approached for comment on this story, Chiefs spokesperson Via Maphosa told Sunday World: “About the cliques in the camp, it has been bandied about and I think there are always those kind of dynamics at every work place when there are different races and ethnic groups.

“As far as Chiefs are concerned, we do not distinguish according to race… All the players are treated the same and all our employees are equal.”

Khune in hot water

Meanwhile, in a bombshell report on FAR Post, it’s stated that “Khune arrived for training on Wednesday morning, showing signs of someone under the influence of alcohol. He was ordered to undergo tests. The results of the tests reportedly confirmed that Khune was indeed under the influence of alcohol. He was immediately sent home.”

The matter is understandably said to be taken very seriously by the club, with the veteran now facing suspension and likely demotion, which could see him stripped of the club captaincy.
