The race for one of the DStv Premiership’s hottest young properties, Evidence Makgopa, is starting to heat up as Orlando Pirates are now believed to have joined the race to secure his signature from Baroka FC.

The Makgopa has earned himself plenty of plaudits from within the South African football fraternity, with his efforts not going without reward. The Baroka marksman walked away with the DStv Premiership’s Most Promising Player award for the season that has just concluded, which has since sent a number of clubs sniffing for his signing including Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.

Makgopa was already a target for the Tshwane clubs

Makgopa was already reported to be a serious target for Pirates’ rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, as well as their Tshwane rivals SuperSport United. The Brazilians as well as “Mastsatsantsa a Pitori” were believed to be involved in a tightly contested race for the 20-year-old but now the Buccaneers faithful will undoubtedly be excited to learn that their club have now “Entered the chat” and are reportedly set to turn it into a three-horse race for the Baroka star

A report from The Citizen has gone as far as claiming Baroka have resigned themselves to losing the lanky attacker, as they realize it will be hard for Magkopa to resist a bigger package, especially from clubs of the stature of Pirates and Sundowns. According to a source speaking to the same publication, Pirates have already established communication with the Limpopo-based side.

Talks with Baroka have already began

“Pirates were already negotiating for Masuluke but seem to have lost interest in him probably because they already have King Ndlovu as part of their new players ahead of the new season.

“They have since been asking about Makgopa’s situation with an interest in having him in their squad next season. They may have a number of players in the similar role, but the past campaign showed them that it was not enough with injuries and all that leaving them thin most of the season,” said the source.

The source went on to suggest that Pirates need to move quickly to ensure they steal a march on their rivals for Makgopa’s signature or else Sundowns and SuperSport could sign him instead.
