Sixteen teams will battle it out for 10 months of grueling and intense action to determine the 2021/22 DStv Premiership champions.

Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu in particular will all believe they have a good chance at the R15 million first prize.

That is almost double the R8 million that is being played for in the MTN8.

The prestigious competition has eluded Kaizer Chiefs for six seasons now.

Current coach Stuart Baxter was in charge on that famous day back in 2015 when Amakhosi secured the 2014/15 PSL title – but they have not tasted success since.

The competition has been dominated by Mamelodi Sundowns who have won the last four titles. They have also won five of the last six and are searching for a 12th title since the dawn of the PSL era in the 1996/97 season.

The PSL returned to action this past weekend filled with the drama and action we have come accustomed to!

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates dropped points against TS Galaxy and Stellenbosch FC, respectively.

Cape Town City and SuperSport United played to goalless draw while last season’s top two clashed in the first game of the new season.

The Brazilians proved too much for Benni McCarthy’s Usuthu after a Themba Zwane penalty secured all three points for Masandawana.

Golden Arrows, Swallows FC and Baroka FC all secured victories over Maritzburg United, Royal AM and Marumo Gallants FC, respectively.

Finally, Gavin Hunt’s Chippa United charges managed a 1-0 victory over newcomers Sekhukhune United.

This year, Mamelodi Sundowns will once again be favourites, but with Stuart Baxter at the helm once more, Kaizer Chiefs will aim to press for title honours as well.

Benni McCarthy is also looking to build on last season’s history-making campaign and has promised to push for silverware too.

Orlando Pirates, Swallows, SuperSport United and Golden Arrows will be competitive and should take a couple of big scalps along the way.
