During the last pre-season, it was reported for quite some time that Bafana Bafana playmaker Pule Mmodi was one of the latest stars on Kaizer Chiefs’ target list, but eventually it emerged that he was set to stay with Golden Arrows as negotiations hit a stumbling block.

Ultimately, Mmodi refocused his efforts at Arrows, found good form and fought his way back onto the Bafana Bafana radar.

Further reports recently suggested that Arrows would not stand in Mmodi’s way if he wanted to make an exit, especially considering his contract at Abafana Bes’thende will come to an end in June 2023.

Last week it was then suggested that reported by ThisIsFootballAfrica that “Pule Mmodi to Chiefs seems to be back on as he is rumoured to have signed a pre-contract with Kaizer Chiefs”.

Interestingly, it’s now suggested by Phakaaathi that Arrows did try to hold on to Mmodi as they sought to secure an extension to his contract so that he doesn’t leave for free. However, it’s believed he is determined to finally head to Chiefs one way or another.

“His mind is made up, he wants to go to Chiefs,” said the Phakaaathi source. “What I am not sure about is the pre-contract that he apparently signed. I really don’t know anything about that, but what I can tell you is that his stay with Arrows is over, his contract with the club is ending once the season is over. All of this is not good for the Arrows management, they don’t like the fact that he will be leaving the club for free.”

Last year, Mmodi opened up on his emotions after the Chiefs move didn’t materialise.

“I was never disturbed. Since the move didn’t happen, I told myself that I will work hard and there’s nothing I can do,” Mmodi said. “But initially I was down, but there was nothing I could do.”

It now remains to be seen when Mmodi may become part of Chiefs’ rebuilt squad

Although some rumours had suggested Mmodi had pushed for a transfer request, his agent always refuted this.
