Top-flight newcomers Stellenbosch FC have seen off competition from the league’s big guns to land the signature of Zambian international Nathan Sinkala.

The player was a subject of reported interest from Gauteng giants Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns but has instead signed a 17-month contract for the Western Cape-based outfit, according to Supersport TV.

This is after cutting ties with Congolese giants, TP Mazembe, who he has represented since 2012.

His former club confirmed his departure earlier in the week;

“At the end of his contract, Nathan Sinkala will not have his lease renewed,” read a statement on the club’s official Twitter account.

“At the club since 2012, the Zambian midfielder was – for a moment – transferred to FC Sochaux in France then loaned to the Swiss of the Zurich Grasshoppers between 2014 and 2015 before returning to Lubumbashi.

“TPM wishes Nathan Sinkala a great success for the rest of his career and will have fond memories of the Zambian midfielder.”

New chapter for Nathan Sinkala

Sinkala comes highly decorated, having been part of the Zambian squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2012.

With TP Mazembe, he has hoisted aloft three consecutive titles, winning the Caf Champions League in 2015, before back-to-back Caf Confederations Cup crowns in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

The 29-year-old has also had a taste of European football in France, where he was in the books of Ligue 2 outfit Sochaux before a loan spell in Switzerland.

He recently hinted at his imminent move to Stellenbosch.

“I think it will be quite a surprise for people to see me at Stellenbosch,” he told KickOff.

“They are not as big as other clubs but yeah, that’s football. I just need a new challenge.”I’m very excited to be in Cape Town, it’s my first time here. I’ve been watching the PSL for many years and I’m just excited to be in South Africa.”

He will be eyeing his Premier Soccer League debut when Stellenbosch take on the struggling Black Leopards away on Sunday, 2 February. Kick-off is at 15:30 (SAST).
