Cape Town City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh is set to leave the club and return to Europe at the end of the current campaign.

Cape Town City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh is set to leave the club and return to Europe.

According to Destentor, Leeuwenburgh has already made up his mind about going back to the Netherlands ahead of the start of the new season.

Leeuwenburgh’s desire to go back to Europe is reportedly due to the fact that he wants to be closer to his family and take his football career to another level.

“I sat down with Cape Town City, with coach Jan Olde Riekerink and the club management, and made my wishes known,” said Leeuwenburgh as per Destenor.

“I have just turned 27, if I really want something as a goalkeeper then it must be done now.

“The time is right. I have become a much better and stronger goalkeeper. I am convinced that I can take on the Premier League,” concluded Leeuwenburgh.

The publication further reports that Leeuwenburgh is undergoing medical tests with FC Groningen, and that the proposed move to the Eredivisie is imminent.

Groningen want to sign Leeuwenburgh because their No.1 goalkeeper, Sergio Padt, is set to leave for Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets Razgrad next season.    

Leeuwenburgh is in his third season with the Citizens, and he has the MTN8 gold medal won during Benni McCarthy’s tenure as his coach.
