Cape Town City have parted ways with one of their top defenders with less than three league matches to go before the end of the season.

In a statement released on Friday, the Citizens confirmed the departure of Greek defender Giannis Potouridis effective immediately.

Potouridis had a year left on his contract with City but the two parties felt it was best to part ways in preparation for next season.

“City bids farewell to Greek defender Giannis Potouridis after agreeing to mutually part ways in preparation for the new season. We wish him the best of luck in the next phase of his career,” said City in the statement.

Potouridis arrived at the Mother City-based outfit in October 2019 as a highly rated defender with European experience.

However, he found it extremely difficult to cement his place in the team’s starting line-up as City’s technical team preferred both Taariq Fielies and Abbubaker Mobara as their centre-back pairing.

Potouridis played only 29 competitive matches for Cape Town City during two-year stay.
