Newly-promoted Stellenbosch FC are looking to beef up their squad with a much-needed injection of experience in the form of veteran defender Morgan Gould, who has spent much of the off-season in the Cape Winelands.

The former Bafana player was in Supersport United’s books in the previous season, where he made just ten league appearances before his contract ran out at the end of June.

His stay at the Tshwane giants came to an end after he did not get a new deal, and he has popped up in training with the new kids on block, who are looking to make an impact in their maiden season in the top flight.

Coach Steven Barker confirmed Gould’s presence in his ranks, and admitted that the club are looking to finalise a deal in the coming days.

“He is training with us and hopefully, by the end of the week we will have finalised his signing,” Barker told reporters.

“Morgan’s experience will help us and his kind of influence in the dressing room will be important.”

Stellenbosch FC reinforce squad ahead of debut season

Should Gould sign on the dotted line, he will become the fifth new signing made by the club ahead of their PSL debut.

Former Dutch youth international goalkeeper Boy de Jong was unveiled as a Stellenbosch FC player on Thursday, signing on a free transfer, having last played for Belgian giants RSC Anderlecht.

The club has also welcomed striker Waseem Isaacs, who joined from first division outfit Ubuntu Cape Town, and is expected to share the goal-scoring duty with Iqraam Rayners, who banged in 19 goals in Stellenbosch’s successful campaign in the second tier.

Other players who have made the Cape Winelands home include ex-Royal Eagles midfielder Dillan Solomons, who helped the KZN side to within touching distance of promotion with his six goals in 22 matches, as well as young defender Zimo Brenner, also from Ubuntu Cape Town.

While the squad is not short of capable players, it is lacking in players with PSL experience, and bringing Gould on board could be invaluable, with over 200 league appearances under his belt.

The lanky defender started his career out with Jomo Cosmos, and spent four years at Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.

Gould has also earned 30 international caps for Bafana Bafana, scoring one goal.
