Cape Town City are assessing the possibility of bringing on board former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Pule Ekstein, who is now a free agent after parting ways with the Soweto giants, KickOff reports.

The 28-year-old left Amakhosi after failing to reach a deal for a contract extension just shortly before the end of the 2017/18 season.

This was after what was a breakthrough season for him at the club, where he made 27 appearances in all competitions.

According to the publication, City assistant coach Vasili Manousakis has confirmed that the player was offered to the club, which is currently weighing its options before deciding whether or not to take him on.

“He was offered to us you know,” Manousakis said.

“The coach (Benni McCarthy) knows about it and we have something to explore. He is a decent player, but we don’t know if we have the ability to land him, we don’t know what the player’s contactual demands are.

“So it’s something that’s been mentioned, it’s on the radar. But you know if we don’t get him it’s okay, if we do get him… but it’s just been a discussion, that’s all it’s been. I’m saying it will depend on the coach.

“The coach likes the boy but it will depend on what his demands are, what his package is, his salary, what is he expecting. You’ve got to look at all those things… why he didn’t renew at Chiefs?

“So ja it is a name that’s come up and I’m sure it’s something that the coach and the chairman will discuss in the next few weeks.”

Ekstein was released by Kaizer Chiefs along with Khotso Malope and Bhongolwethu Jayiya.

He had contributed with five goals across competitions for the club.
