There’s no less than five PSL fixtures on the card on Wednesday night, and the action is headlined by a battle between first and last, as Orlando Pirates make the trip to Harry Gwala Stadium for a clash against Maritzburg United.

The Buccaneers are tied at the top with defending league champions Mamelodi Sundowns on 50 points, but summit the table – thanks to a superior goal difference.

They will be looking to open some daylight at the top, as they seek their fourth win on the bounce against a side battling the stay afloat.

At a crucial stage of the league campaign, the Soweto giants have now gone seven matches unbeaten, with wins over Bidvest Wits, Black Leopards and Free State Stars in their last three outings.

One man who will have some knowledge of the inner workings in the Pirates camp is Maritzburg coach Eric Tinkler, who spent a couple of seasons coaching the side.

The Bafana legend is determined to pull the Team of Choice out of last place, where they find themselves in a situation where not even a victory on Wednesday would drag them out of the basement.

With four games still to play, Tinkler believes three points against his former side is an important towards his current charges’ chances of survival.

“Orlando Pirates, tough game, but we should be motivated to play against Orlando Pirates.

“The win is even more important than in seasons gone by. This seasons is about survival and collecting three points against Pirates is extremely important to us.”

Eric Tinkler
