There is a trend of PSL coaches going back “home” to their former clubs for a second stint, sometimes even a third or fourth. While the homecomings to former clubs have proven successful for some coaches, for others – not so much.

Here are some PSL coaches who went back to their former clubs:

Dan Malesela, one of Chippa United’s favourite PSL coaches

Recently, coach Dan Malesela made a return to one of his former clubs Marumo Gallants. It came as a surprise to many because of how the two parted ways earlier this year.

Malesela first joined Marumo Gallants in November last season, as the team was lingering at the bottom of the table with no wins. Malesela helped the team finish 10th in the league and they went all the way to the Nedbank Cup final, only to lose to Mamelodi Sundowns.

According to SowetanLIVE, Malesela got sacked during preseason after being accused of match-fixing by the club. It all remains to be seen what Malesela’s second stint at the club will be like. Malesela is also one of the many PSL coaches who have had a yo-yo relationship with Chippa United, being fired four times previously.

Gavin Hunt

Gavin Hunt returned to SuperSport United ahead of the current season, making it his second stint at the club. Hunt was previously with the club between the 2007/2008 – 2012/2013 seasons.

In his first stint, he won the league title three times in a row, becoming the first coach in the PSL with such a record. Hunt also won the Nedbank Cup.

The SuperSport United officials seemed pleased with Hunt’s return, with the club’s CEO Stan Matthews claiming Hunt’s return felt like “welcoming a family member home”.

With a couple of games played this season, it might be too soon to tell how Hunt’s second stint at SuperSport United will turn out.

Stuart Baxter

After a stint with Bafana Bafana between 2004-2005, Stuart Baxter had his first coaching job in the PSL at Kaizer Chiefs.

Baxter spent three seasons with Kaizer Chiefs, between 2012-2013 and 2014-2015, during his first stint, winning two league titles, the Nedbank Cup and the MTN 8.

Baxter left Chiefs after the 2014-2015 season, only to come back a few years later for the 2021-2022 season.

After a drought that dates back to the 2014-2015 season, Chiefs were hoping that Baxter was the man to bring success back to the club. But it wasn’t to be, as he got sacked in April earlier this year.

Ernst Middendorp, Maritzburg United’s most-loved PSL coaches

German mentor Ernst Middendorp also had his first coaching job in the PSL at Kaizer Chiefs.
