As it stands, perennial DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns are once again at the summit of the league standings, level on points with surprise package Richards Bay, although the KZN club has played two more games. Meanwhile, Gavin Hunt’s SuperSport United are in third spot.

Also in the chasing pack, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are still in the top five, but many believe it’s the Buccaneers who are best placed to challenge the hegemony of Sundowns.

Earlier this week, though, SuperSport United made it three wins in a row in the DStv Premiership when they brushed aside Stellenbosch FC 2-0 at the Danie Craven Stadium.

The win briefly elevated Matsatsantsa to the top of the league standings, while they are now set to take on Swallows FC in a Gauteng Derby clash on 30 October.

Taking to Twitter this week, Pitso Mosimane gave kudos to Hunt and SuperSport, but also seemed to offer a friendly warning about Chippa’s Morgan Mammila, who has made a successful transition to coaching.

Gavin Hunt is enjoying great success at SuperSport

Although SuperSport have shown some encouraging signs so far this season, Hunt recently downplayed the championship chances for his club, and in fact stated his belief that only Pirates could be held in such high regard.

“I still don’t think we are close enough… We are just trying to get as many points as we can, but I don’t think we are close. I still think Pirates is the only team that can challenge Sundowns. Pirates are the main challengers, the rest of us are just joking,” Hunt explained.

In May last year, Kaizer Chiefs released Hunt from his contract after a string of poor results with the club, although he had led Amakhosi to the semi-final of the CAF Champions League.

After a brief move to Chippa United, Hunt had been without a job for quite some time, but he has proven to be a great fit upon joining SuperSport.
