Mosimane came in on a short-term deal, with half the season to go. After many ups and downs which included heavy defeats to Al-Nassr and Al Ahli he took it to the last day. On the Saudi Pro League finale, Abha entered already above the relegation zone. All the team needed to do to stay alive, was to either win or draw, depending on the other results. It seemed as if the stars were aligning as their finally opponent was the already relegated Al Hazm

Abha relegated

Even though Al Hazm did not have anything to fight for, they certainly fought for their pride on the night. The team took the fight to Abha and ensured they reached the break at 0-0. But coming out of the tunnel, Mosimane seemed to have reminded his players of the task at hand. It did not take long for them to get off the mark after the restart. Ahmed Abdu Jaber put them in the lead in the 47th minute.

Just when Abha would’ve been thinking they had some good momentum, the hosts would not go away. They were able to get a much needed equaliser. 58th-minute mark through Gambian forward Muhammed Badamosi. The hosts would then place a late dagger in the hearts of the visitors and Mosimane, with an 80th winner. That would ensure that their opponents on the night joined them in the lower division next season.

Speaking to the media after that disappointing outcome, Mosimane hinted at his departure from Abha.

Mosimane leaving? Chiefs next destination?

“I took a risk and came to a team at the bottom of the league. I knew it was a difficult task, but I had hope when we got out of the danger zone three times. Everything must be accepted, and my contract with the club expires today” said Mosimane in his post-match press conference.

Mosimane is known to be Kaizer Chiefs’ number one target for their coaching role. It has been thought that he may be too expensive for the club, as he comes with his own technical team. Chiefs are now believed to be ready to spend big on a coach and his staff in order to climb up the ladder again.

With Mosimane being relegated, it could workout perfectly for Chiefs as the proud mentor could seek to revive the club.
