There is no doubt that Orlando Pirates have shown signs of progress this season under new coach José Riveiro, but for a club of this stature, the Buccaneers will want to continue building a squad capable of contenting for the league title in the near future.

In the latest edition of Soccer Laduma, it’s now interestingly reported that the club is keeping tabs on TS Galaxy central defender and leader Spiwe ‘Given’ Msimango, who is certainly highly-regarded in local football circles.

Last year it was reported by iDiski Times that Msimango had been sounded out by Chiefs as they considered their player options for this season, but ultimately a move never materialised.

As it is, last year TS Galaxy looked to secure the 25-year-old’s future by extending his contract through to June 2025, and so if Pirates were truly interested, they would need to pay a hefty transfer fee in all likelihood.

Pirates are currently preparing for another edition of the Soweto derby which will take centre stage on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off is at 15:30 at the FNB Stadium.

Pirates were the biggest winners from this past weekend’s latest round of league action after clinching a 2-0 victory over Maritzburg United at the Orlando Stadium on Friday. It was a result that saw them move up to third position on the log, and there is clearly a real confidence about the Buccaneers at the moment.

By contrast, a depleted Kaizer Chiefs team slipped to a 3-2 defeat at the Peter Mokaba Stadium despite Sfiso Hlanti and Mduduzi Shabalala having twice put Amakhosi into the lead.

Chiefs are still fifth on the log, but they are now three points behind Pirates, and still as many as 27 points behind runaway leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
