No space for sentiment when it comes to business decisions.

Orlando Pirates have released a raft of first-team players and more could follow them out the door shortly.

Top earners released by the Buccaneers

Pirates have already released Souaibou Marou, Fortune Makaringe, Thabang Monare, Siyabonga Mpontshane, Richard Ofori and Kermit Erasmus, while Deon Hotto and Zakhele Lepasa are names being bandied about for an exit next. The majority of these names feature prominently at the top of the Pirates wage bill. The board is trying to restructure player salaries and move on a few high earners on the wrong side of 30.

According to Briefly, the club’s earner is taking home R500,000 a month, information corroborated by salarypedia.co.za. Here goes, with all figures mentioned as monthly salaries:

  • 1. Deon Hotto: R500,000
  • 2. Kermit Erasmus: R350,000
  • 3. Richard Ofori: R300,000
  • 4. Evidence Makgopa: R200,000
  • 5. Fortune Makaringe: R185,000
  • 6. Vincent Pule: R170,000
  • 7. Innocent Maela: R150,000
  • 8. Thagang Monare: R150,000
  • 9. Zakhele Lepasa: R150,000
  • 10. Goodman Mosele: R150,000 (on-loan at Chippa).

All of the names italicized in this list have been released or are rumoured to be leaving. If all six depart for pastures new, Pirates would free up more than R1.635 million a month in wages. That’s not counting the money saved on Mpontshane and Marou’s wages which weren’t publicly available on these resources.

Lepasa could be heading to the Mother City?

Local outlet iDiski Times believes that Cape Town City wants to take a gamble on Zakhele Lepasa. This news comes just days after Kermit Erasmus, recently released by Pirates, was also linked with a return to his former club.

“It’s believed that John Comitis is keeping a close eye on Zakhele Lepasa’s situation at Orlando Pirates. The club has earmarked the 27-year-old as the ideal striker for Eric Tinkler’s side in 2024/25.”
