Durban stood still on 20 September 2014 with the arrival of Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates for the MTN 8 final.

The two titans of South Africa meet again in the semifinals of the 2020 edition of the competition, with the Buccaneers hosting the first leg of the semifinal tie at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

The meeting is their first in the tournament since they locked horns at Moses Mabhida Stadium that Saturday afternoon.

Last time out

The fixture will mostly be remembered for the heroics of a player who has represented both clubs.

Without stalwart, Itumeleng Khune between the posts, Brilliant Khuzwayo was called upon by Kaizer Chiefs, and announced himself on the big stage.

The shot-stopper was the difference between the two sides, as Orlando Pirates dominated proceedings in search of the equaliser after a 28th-minute opener from Amakhosi’s Tefu Mashamaite.

Chiefs and Pirates are the two most successful clubs in the MTN 8, which has had several title-sponsors in the PSL era, with 15 and nine titles respectively.

Amakhosi were victorious the first time they met in the competition after the top-flight was remodelled in 1996.

In total, they have met seven times in the tournament in the PSL era, with each side recording a victory apiece in the final.

Both two-legged semifinal ties they have contested have been won by Pirates, with Chiefs winning the other last-four clash, which was played over one leg.

Saturday’s clash will be the first time they meet at this stage of the competition since 2012, when the Buccaneers scored a crucial away victory before holding out for a one-all stalemate to progress to the final.
