Orlando Pirates will once again return to Europe to play La Liga giants Sevilla during the preseason.

Jose Riveiro’s men had their preseason in Spain last year where they played Maccabi Tel Aviv, Independiente Valle and Las Palmas. The Sea Robbers concluded their preseason tour unbeaten but struggled somewhat in the league but were almost unbeatable in cup games.

This week Spanish giants Sevilla revealed Orlando Pirates will be one of their preseason opponents.

“The first stage of pre-season will take place at the training ground, the Ciudad Deportiva Jose Ramon Cisneros Palacios, with the team taking advantage of the new residence and exclusive first-team facilities,” the La Liga side announced on their website.

When are Orlando Pirates playing Sevilla?

“During this time, there will be three friendlies. First up is the South African side Orlando Pirates, who will visit the Jesús Navas Stadium for a behind-closed-doors fixture on Wednesday 15 July.”

Orlando Pirates players will benefit from playing Sevilla but how? We look at three reasons why the Buccaneers will emerge stronger ahead of the 2024/25 DStv Premiership season.

Riveiro gave the team some exposure in Spain last year but this time it’s different. The Buccaneers are now stronger and look confident compared to a year ago when they played Las Palmas. The trip to Spain will give the likes of Patrick Maswangany and Relebohile Mofokeng the much-needed exposure they deserve.

Sevilla finished 14th last season and will look to enforce their squad and maybe one or two Orlando Pirates players might get snatched if they impress.

Enrich players’ skill set

Spanish players are skilful and very creative with the ball just like South African footballers. The main difference between Orlando Pirates and Sevilla is that the La Liga team is extremely proactive when it comes to defending possession turnovers. They apply high pressure on the field to intercept the ball, and if the opposing team successfully passes through the press, the central defenders aggressively move forward to challenge the ball.

Build team spirit and trust

Unlike Sevilla, Orlando Pirates have had an successful 2023/24 season. Riveiro has created a healthy dressing room and having another preaseason in Europe will create a stronger bond between himself and the players. As we’ve seen in the past, teams are more likely to bond more when they are in an unfamilar terortory.
