Orlando Pirates are reshuffling their bloated attack and that could mean they sell a few Bafana Bafana stars.

Lepasa following Kermit to the Cape?

Local outlet iDiski Times believes that Cape Town City wants to take a gamble on Zakhele Lepasa. This news comes just days after Kermit Erasmus, recently released by Pirates, was also linked with a return to his former club.

“It’s believed that John Comitis is keeping a close eye on Zakhele Lepasa’s situation at Orlando Pirates. The club has earmarked the 27-year-old as the ideal striker for Eric Tinkler’s side in 2024/25.”

Consistently inconsistent

After a brief purple patch in front of goal in 2022, Lepasa’s productivity has dried up again. He scored three times in 15 league appearances in 2023-2024, often overlooked because of the form of Tshegofatso Mabasa and the physical prowess of Evidence Makgopa. Ironically, Golden Boot winner Mabasa, who struck 16 times in the DStv Premiership, isn’t part of Hugo Broos’ plans at the national level while Lepasa is one of the Belgian’s most trusted squad options behind Makgopa for Bafana. However, he wasn’t included in the recent group for qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe, perhaps indicating now’s the time for him to secure first-team football elsewhere and get his club career back on track.

Regular Pirates right-back Thabiso Monyane was on the verge of seeing his contract expire. However, the Buccaneers have moved swiftly to extend their terms. The popular opinion is that right-back is an area which requires improvement at the club, but Monyane’s experience is vital. Right now, 24-year-old Monyane is the incumbent with his namesake Thabiso Lebitso the more marauding, forward-thinking option on that side of defence. Lebitso is 32, however, so time isn’t on his side and the board clearly see Monyane as the long-term holder of the position.

“Yes, apparently it’s a three-year contract. According to the records we have his current contract could have expired this month, but now he will be at the team until June 2027. He has the experience now and with the other players in his position it’s good for the team as they will be playing in the CAF Champions League and they need experienced players in all departments. So, yes it’s a three-year deal and everything is happy at the moment,” said a source to Soccer-Laduma.
