Orlando Pirates PSL form guide: Two wins in five ahead of Soweto Derby

Orlando Pirates are unbeaten in four matches in all competitions and have won their last two matches but aren’t sweeping aside all comers.

Orlando Pirates are unbeaten in four matches in all competitions and have won their last two matches but they have been far from impressive in the month of October when it comes to the DStv Premiership.

The 3-0 MTN 8 win over Mamelodi Sundowns lends a rosier tint to their recent performances, but even that result flatters the Sea Robbers.

It does give us some insight into when Pirates play their best football though.

As pointed out by the Sundowns coaching staff, Orlando Pirates under Jose Riveiro are very good at controlling matches from the lead and will happily allow the opponents mountains of possession.

Winning ugly

Three of Orlando Pirates’ five PSL wins this season were achieved by a margin of 1-0.

Bucs have struggled in front of goal this term scoring just nine goals in 12 DStv Premiership matches so far.

Their best goals haul came against Sundowns in the Cup and that was in the context of the Brazilians chasing the tie in the dying embers and being left exposed at the back.

The latest PSL transfer rumours

Pirates have been very good in defence keeping seven clean sheets in 12 outings and letting in just six goals in all.

Jose Riveiro have favoured a 3-4-3 formation this season and has started with a back four in just one PSL match so far this season.

That back four was deployed in Orlando Pirates’ 2-0 win over Golden Arrows.

Nkosinathi Sibisi has racked up the most minutes of any Orlando Pirates player in the PSL to date, being the first to move beyond 1,000 minutes played.

Sibisi is closely followed by skipper Innocent Maela and first-choice keeper Richard Ofori.

Attacking players have struggled for minutes and their goal drought hasn’t been helped by the chopping and changing.
