During a chat in the latest issue of Soccer Laduma, the former Orlando Pirates star was asked to reveal one of the key factors that has helped AmaZulu earn immediate respect in the CAF Champions League.

According to the Mbekweni-born player, it is much about the natural ability of local players.

“When you grow up as players, we always have this thing as South Africans that we are more special than any other country in the world, even though our country doesn’t meet the needs,” Memela said.

“To be honest, we are quality players. When you grow up and play ekasi, you always have that thing,” he added.

“So that thing, it always stayed on my mind when I play in Africa or even in Europe at some point when I was still playing for Ajax Cape Town juniors. We were too good for them. They could not manage us.

“Even though they play good football. I always say that class is something most players don’t have.”

ONLY BRAZILIANS COMPARE

So just how special are the Mzansi players compared to the very best in the world? According to the former Orlando Pirates number 11, it is only the Brazilians who can go toe to toe with us when it comes to pure ability.

“If I can mention a country that can compare with the quality that we have, I would say Brazil with the skill and the speed, which is what we have.

“It is just a matter of us as a country trying to find a way to copy the likes of Brazil and even Spain so that we can compete out there in the world.

“So for me, it has always been about, you know, not in a bad way, to be arrogant as a player,” the 34-year-old added.
