Orlando Pirates news: Pule aims for improved performance in upcoming season

Vincent Pule was one of the star turns for Orlando Pirates in the 2018/19 season, helping them finish as league runners-up.

One of the biggest revelations of the 2018/19 season was attacking midfielder Vincent Pule who, up until he signed for Orlando Pirates, had seen very little opportunity to showcase his talents.

The 27-year-old was one of a host of signings made by the Buccaneers ahead of last season, and stood out among the newcomers, particularly in the early stages of the campaign, where he was rewarded with a Bafana call-up.

His quick start in his new surroundings was a stark contrast to what he was able to manage at his previous club Bidvest Wits, where he battle to cement a regular place in his first three seasons, before making 21 league appearances in the campaign before his departure.

Having helped Pirates finish as runners-up in the league for a second consecutive season, Pule believes he can take his game a step further.

“I think this season I just have to improve, like every player wants to improve every season. I just want to be a better player and a better person,” Pule told reporters on Monday.

“I think I just have to work harder than last season and everything will be great.”

Pule made a total of 38 appearances in all competitions for Orlando Pirates, mostly operating on the right flank.

He contributed with nine goals and five assists, his eight league strikers putting him just behind Thembinkosi Lorch as the club’s second leading PSL goal scorer.

The Free State-born player is determined to get better, but won’t pressure himself by setting targets.

“I just have to improve – get better every season – and I think, for me, I don’t want to put myself under pressure. I just have to do better than last season.”

Pule is on track to line-up against rivals Kaizer Chiefs in what’s become the traditional PSL curtain-raiser, the Carling Black Label Cup clash against rivals Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 27 July.

The player recently surpassed 15 000 votes and is almost a sure bet for a starting place.

Orlando Pirates begin their PSL campaign with a home fixture against Bloemfontein Celtic at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, 3 August.
