Pirates’ Saleng makes Chiefs confession

Every in-form team has a man of the moment. For Orlando Pirates, that fellow is Monnapule Saleng after destroying Mamelodi Sundowns.

Orlando PiratesMonnapule Saleng is one of the biggest names in the streets of South Africa right now, thanks to an assist and brace to send Mamelodi Sundowns out of the MTN8 on Saturday.

As The South African website reported on Saturday evening, the Sea Robbers have sailed into the MTN8 final courtesy of a 3-0 victory over the champions Sundowns.

Kermit Erasmus broke the deadlock with a header in the eight-minute, before Saleng finished the job with a brace in the 83rd minute and stoppage time.

Speaking in an interview ahead of his move from Free State Stars to Pirates in 2021, the Bloemhof-born player revealed which team he supported growing up, and it’s Bucs’ bitter rivals Amakhosi.

Asked if he had always been a Pirates fan, the 24-year-old said he was a Khosi.

“Did you grow up supporting Pirates?” Veteran local journalist Velile Mnyundu asked.

“No, no [laughs], I grew up supporting Chiefs,” Saleng responded.

Meanwhile, Saleng is expected to start for Pirates against Chiefs in the Soweto derby this weekend.
